In Japanese, the word Raku means “ease and enjoyment”.
In this method red-hot ware is removed from the kiln and immersed into a charcoal or straw pit, and sealed off from oxygen. A reduction reaction occurs and changes the nature of the metallic oxides in the glazes, and combined with the smoke, creates magic effects.
Raku firing is a very quick, exciting and spontaneous experience. The results are unpredictable and the surprise element is what the drives the artist to keep experimenting until the perfect result is achieved – there is “Method in Madness”!
